Oakland, Calif. – November 30, 2021: Oakland International Airport welcomed travelers for the Thanksgiving holiday last week, nearly reaching pre-pandemic passenger traffic levels based on reported security checkpoint throughput.
For Thanksgiving 2021 (between Friday, November 19th and Sunday, November 28th), over 148,000 passengers departed from Oakland International Airport. This is over 2.5 times the number of passengers that departed OAK during Thanksgiving 2020, and 77.5% of pre-pandemic passenger levels. Sunday, November 21st, was the day that came closest to pre-pandemic levels at 86.3%.
The busiest day of the holiday travel period was Wednesday, November 24th, with nearly 17,300 departing passengers, followed closely by Sunday, November 28th, with nearly 17,200 departing passengers. The day with the fewest travelers was Thanksgiving Day with approximately 10,600 departing passengers.
“While this Thanksgiving was certainly a busy one for Oakland International Airport, careful coordination and cooperation with our airline and security partners resulted in smooth operations at OAK throughout the travel week.” says Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We would also like to thank the travelers that chose to fly OAK to see their family and friends for Thanksgiving this year, and we look forward to welcoming more passengers for the December holidays.”
