Tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain delivers living history at Jack London Square

Oakland, CA – (September 23, 2016): Tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain serves as a living history project and is docked at Jack London Square at the Foot of Broadway today through Monday, Sept. 26, 2016. Made of steel in Hawaii in 1988 and originally designed for cargo trade among the Hawaiian Islands, the vessel is reminiscent of the sailing ships used on the Atlantic coast from 1850-1900.

Hawaiian Chieftain is a two-masted, topsail ketch and part of the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (GHHSA). The crew provides hands-on educational experiences with special walk-on tours and ticketed sails. They make it possible for the public to get a feel for what it was like to move cargo when wind in the sails powered a ship at sea and the stars guided its captain. The Port made a short video during the Hawaiian Chieftain’s last visit to Oakland.

Visitors can take a dockside tour of the Hawaiian Chieftain at Jack London Square this weekend at the same time the Eat Real Festival is happening. They can learn about the tasks and characteristics of a good sailor in the early days of maritime trade. They will hear about the working conditions on ships that carried sailors across the sea for hundreds of years. There are also opportunities to participate in ticketed sailing adventures. GHHSA’s mission is to promote and preserve maritime history and traditions.
