Sunday Harvest Festival at Jack London Square Farmers Market

Oakland, Calif. – October 27, 2016: Jack London Square will transform into a Harvest Festival this Sunday, October 30, from 9 AM to 2 PM. The festival includes free tastings, food demos, kids’ activities and a pie contest. Halloween costumes are welcome.

Visitors can try their hand at cider pressings using heirloom organic apples from local farmers or make a seed ball with Farm Kids. Mini pumpkin decorating is offered with artists from Arts for Oakland Kids. Dominica Rice-Cisneros, chef/owner of Cosecha in Old Oakland, will demonstrate how to make a butternut squash mole. According to Festival organizer CUESA, Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, most Harvest Festival activities are free.

The pie contest is open to amateurs: See details, rules, and entry form ». Pie entries can be submitted between 10 and 11 AM Sunday; winners are scheduled to be announced around 12:45 PM.

Students from Life Learning Academy, based on Treasure Island, will be selling plant starts and herbs from their school garden and honey from their beehive. Schoolyard to Market is a youth development, entrepreneurship, and gardening program.

CUESA hopes to initiate the Farmers Market as a tool to educate adults and kids about sustainable food systems. CUESA took over the Jack London Square Farmers Market operations last May. The Harvest Festival is their re-launch of the Sunday market which is open year round, rain or shine.
