Oakland International Airport passengers produce busiest May since 2008

Traffic up 5.8 percent, 30 consecutive months of growth

Press Releases, Airport
June 24th, 2016

Oakland, Calif. - June 24, 2016: Passenger growth at Oakland International Airport (OAK) surged last month posting the busiest month of May in eight years.  The Airport said today that May passenger traffic totaled 1,000,752, constituting an increase of 5.8%, or 54,591 over May 2015. This marks the 30th-consecutive month of year-over-year traffic growth at OAK.

Passenger traffic grew 10.3% in May 2015 versus 2014, and has grown 16.7% in two years.

Oakland International Airport Director Bryant L. Francis stated, “We are very pleased to witness this continued upward pattern as the busy summer travel season gets underway.  There is a growing awareness of OAK as a major air access channel, not just for the East Bay but for the entire Bay Area.  This is echoed by our air carrier partners through the addition of flights and new nonstop routes, and from our customers through making ever greater use of the steadily increasing number of available seats.”

The Airport attributed May’s passenger increase to the launch of a long-anticipated U.S. summer travel season.  The inauguration of the first Oakland-to-London service on Norwegian also drove traffic higher.

Passenger traffic growth is likely to increase again in June, the Airport said.  Southwest Airlines introduced new daily Oakland service this month to Long Beach, Reno-Tahoe and St. Louis, adding over 1,000 daily outbound seats.
