May 25th, 2021

Oakland, Calif. – May 25, 2021: Oakland International Airport has begun the environmental review process for a proposed Terminal Modernization and Development Project. As the first step in the environmental review process required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the Port of Oakland issued the Notice of Preparation of a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on May 7, 2021. The Port owns and operates Oakland International Airport.

Interested parties have until 3:00 pm PDT on June 7, 2021 to submit comments on what needs to be included in the EIR, which is expected to be released for public review next year. For information on how to submit comments on the scope of the EIR, including information on how to participate in the virtual public meetings on May 25 and 26, 2021, please visit: www.oaklandairport.com/terminaldevelopment.

“OAK’s terminal facilities have experienced congestion during busy periods in the past few years and there is the need to replace aging and outdated facilities,” said Bryant L. Francis, Port of Oakland Aviation Director. “The Terminal Modernization and Development Project will address these needs by modernizing and renovating existing facilities and adding new facilities to maximize safety, efficiency, flexibility, and security for passengers and workers.”

This is the first of several opportunities for other government agencies, community organizations and the general public to provide input in the EIR process. When the EIR is complete, the Port’s Board of Commissioners will consider the EIR and determine if the EIR was prepared in accordance with CEQA. The Board will decide if they have the needed information to make a decision regarding project approval.
