Jack London Square free pop-up gallery showcases muralists and local artists

Oakland, Calif. – May 9, 2018: Muralists and local artists are displaying their work at Jack London Square through the end of May in a free pop-up gallery. The exhibit is open when other public events are happening at the Square on weekends and is part of the inaugural Oakland Art Month created by Visit Oakland.

"The Oakland Mural Festival will bring together Bay Area muralists and Oakland youth through a series of artists' residencies and workshops," said Bay Area Mural Festival founder Sarah Siskin. "This festival is a celebration of public art and a way of uniting a community through local collaborations."

There are nine new murals being painted in the Jack London District of Oakland. Artists are sharing their paintings at the Jack London Square pop-up gallery at 54 Washington Street on the ground floor. 

The week-long Oakland Mural Festival runs May 12 through May 19. It will end with a closing celebration in Jack London Square, Saturday, May 19, from noon to 5 pm with community painting, performances by local musicians and dancers and children's activities.

The Oakland  Mural Festival themes are social issues, the city's historically industrial waterfront and Oakland's cultural identity.
