Port of Oakland Launches Paid 2015 Summer College Internship Program

Unique opportunities in engineering, aviation, and other professional fields

Oakland, Calif. – March 3, 2015 – Recruitment begins today, Tuesday, March 3, 2015, for the Port of Oakland’s 2015 Summer College Internship Program. The Port’s three business lines, aviation, commercial real estate, and maritime, offer a unique learning environment. Through a competitive process, students can apply for a paid internship related to engineering, social responsibility, communications, and more.

Port of Oakland Social Responsibility Director Amy Tharpe said, “This program is designed to provide students experience in the day-to-day workplace. Our goal is to expose these young people to diverse career opportunities, teamwork, networking, and communication skills that will be useful in shaping their future interests.” Tharpe added, “An internship can serve as a first job and as a path to a professional career by opening up doors and opportunities.”

College and graduate students are welcome to compete for a position in the 9-week, paid internship, which is held during the months of June through August. For over 17 years, the Port of Oakland has provided summer jobs, work experience and exposure to careers for hundreds of students through its Summer College Internship Program.

The types of duties will vary from general clerical/administrative to technical expertise and/or fieldwork that may require proficient computer skills. Port staff offers interns an opportunity to gain insight into a variety of fields including: aviation, communications, community relations, contract compliance, engineering, environmental programs, executive office, governmental affairs, human resources, maritime, law, security administration (airport) and social responsibility. Also, students have access to Port workshops that are offered to supplement the intern experience.
