Pedalfest returns to Jack London Square Saturday

Oakland, Calif.–July 21, 2016: Pedalfest rolls into Jack London Square, Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 11 AM to 6 PM. The free annual event celebrates all-things cycling at this Bay Area premier bicycle festival.

In partnership with Bike East Bay, Pedalfest is anticipated to draw more than 20,000 biking enthusiasts to the Oakland waterfront. This family-friendly festival offers bicycle-themed entertainment, food, live music and exhibits.

Bike East Bay Executive Director Renee Rivera said, “The event is for everyone from the recreational rider and casual observer to the seasoned cyclist. Pedalfest showcases what makes cycling such a wonderful activity for individuals, groups and families.”

Pedalfest-goers will enjoy cycling daredevils performing in a 30-foot banked wooden velodrome – a circular performance arena where the cyclists ride on the sloped sides of the velodrome. Attendees can also view a collection of new, vintage and handmade bikes from all over the Bay Area.

“This is one of the many unique and free events we offer during the summer at the Oakland waterfront, and one which has become extremely popular,” said Pam Kershaw, Port of Oakland Director of Commercial Real Estate. “We’re excited to have the sixth annual Pedalfest in Jack London Square where ‘kids’ of all ages can come together to enjoy a fun day devoted to cycling.”

There will be a Kids Bicycle Parade through the Square at Noon. Walk Oakland Bike Oakland and The Original Scraper Bike Team will be hosting a decorating station where children can adorn their bikes with free spoke cards, streamers and stickers at 11AM.

Visitors curious about electric bikes can see the latest in bike tech and test ride a variety of e-bikes, including electric cargo bikes, on the e-bike test track located at Embarcadero and Broadway. Riders must be 18 years of age.

A team of youth cycling instructors will lead a bicycle rodeo for children throughout the day including a bike safety course, skills building lessons and bicycle safety instructions. Bikes and helmets will be provided to participating youngsters grades three through six.
