OAK kicks off busy summer travel season Memorial Day weekend

Sun Country, Viva Aerobus debut at OAK, and nonstops to Atlanta on Delta Air Lines

Oakland, Calif.—May 20, 2024: San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) expects to be busy throughout the Memorial Day holiday travel weekend. Over 130,000 passengers are expected at the airport between Friday, May 24th and Monday, May 27th. Passenger traffic is expected to be at comparable levels seen during the same period last year. Travelers are encouraged to arrive early and reserve airport parking ahead of time.

“This Memorial Day, our OAK staff remembers those who lost their lives while defending our country,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We thank travelers who have chosen to fly OAK over the long weekend and throughout the summer season. We hope that passengers enjoy the new service and the food and beverage concessions making their debut at OAK this summer.”

Memorial Day marks the traditional beginning of the summer travel season. OAK projects over 3.4 million passengers to pass through the airport’s doors between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

New routes at OAK this summer include:

  • Sun Country Airlines service to Minneapolis-Saint Paul – beginning May 23
  • Delta Air Lines to Atlanta – beginning June 7
  • Viva Aerobus to Monterrey, Mexico – beginning July 1

Seasonal service resuming this summer includes:

  • Allegiant Air to Bellingham, Idaho Falls, Missoula, and Glacier National Park (Kalispell, Montana).
  • SATA Azores Airlines to Terceira Island, Portugal resumes on June 5 and runs through September 25. This exclusive weekly service, which has operated at OAK for more than two decades, is the only flight between the U.S. west coast and the Azores Archipelago.

Passengers are encouraged to download their airline’s mobile application to check in for their flight and enable notifications to receive important updates regarding their itinerary. TSA wait time information is available via the MyTSA mobile app and packing tips for smooth screening may be found on the TSA website. Current information on airport restaurant and store operating hours are available here.
