Labor Day weekend to attract nearly 200,000 travelers at Oakland International Airport

Oakland, Calif. – August 30, 2018:  This Labor Day holiday weekend travelers will be departing Oakland International Airport (OAK) to more destinations than ever before. OAK is preparing for a busy Labor Day holiday weekend, which traditionally marks the end of the peak summer travel period. OAK is anticipating nearly 200,000 passengers during the five-day period beginning today, August 30, through Monday, September 3. The additional travelers this year represent an increase of over 8% more travelers than the Labor Day travel period last year. Peak travel for the holiday weekend is expected to be Friday, August 31, with over 48,000 passengers expected.

“Oakland International continues to sustain high passenger volumes,” said Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland. “Travelers are enjoying a record number of non-stop destinations from OAK, including long-haul, transcontinental, and intrastate flight options. We are pleased to welcome more Bay Area residents and visitors who choose OAK for our convenient and reliable service as they conclude summer travels this weekend.”

Airport officials recommend that travelers check with their airlines for flight status updates. They suggest 90 minutes for domestic departures and 3 hours for international departures to allow for increased passenger volume at airline check-in and security screening locations.

For travelers planning to arrive at OAK by BART during this weekend’s evening hours, the Airport notes that through September 1st, BART will close one of the tracks between the Coliseum and OAK BART stations to complete important maintenance projects. One train will remain in operation, and trains will arrive every 18 minutes, rather than every 6 minutes. For more information about the work and possible travel impacts to BART’s OAK station and other locations, visit the BART website at www.bart.gov, where details are available on the homepage.
