Oakland, Calif. – May 30, 2018: Dancing Under the Stars at Jack London Square kicks off Friday. The free dance lesson and party for locals and visitors runs every Friday night through August. All ages are welcome.
“It’s great to see hundreds of people, including families with kids, coming to this big outdoor dance party at the Oakland waterfront,” said Pam Kershaw, Port of Oakland Director of Commercial Real Estate. “This is one of the many popular and free community events at the Square throughout the year.”
There is a dance show at 7:30 p.m. The lesson begins at 8:00 p.m. and transitions to a dance party after 8:30 p.m. The free lessons are taught by professional dance instructors Johnny Lopez and Carla Service.
There is a fresh twist to the lessons this year with a different theme for each Friday night. Besides traditional Latin partner dances like salsa and cumbia, teachers will provide free instruction on how to dance to pop, Polynesian, reggae music and more. The lesson is followed by a mixed-music dance party ending at 10 p.m.
Dancing Under the Stars is a casual, no-pressure, lesson and party. Beginners to advanced dancers are welcome.
There are over 55 free public events at Jack London Square. Go here to see all the activities at the Oakland waterfront.
