Oakland, Calif. – July 5, 2018: Jack London Square hosts the first of three Taste of Oakland festivals Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free, multicultural event will feature live music, tech demos and local food and craft vendors.
Yoga sessions and soccer clinics kick off the day at 7:30 a.m. Celebrity Chef Nikki Shaw will give a cooking demonstration, making a meal from fresh organic produce.
The event includes internship opportunities for youngsters. Youth Aid Summer Camp interns, ages 8 to 18, will gain experience in technology and coding for industry level computer programming. Youth Aid works with children from underserved communities.
“Students from the camp will be helping out with the tech lab and demonstration, as well as setting up sound equipment on stage,” said Frances Goodson, Executive Director for Youth Aid Nonprofit. “Youth Aid is proud to partner with Jack London Square and Taste of Oakland to provide this unique internship for local youth.”
The entertainment reflects diverse musical artistry with performances by Oakland based hip-hop artists The Corna Sto, Reggae artist Heartafiya and Afro-Latin Funk group Sang Matiz.
There is a suggested donation of $10 for the event. All proceeds will help fund Youth Aid’s free music programs.
Upcoming Taste of Oakland events will be held on Aug. 4, and Sept. 1.
Jack London Square restaurants, including Belcampo, Dyafa, Kincaid’s and Scott’s Seafood will offer specials throughout the day. Food and drink from local vendors will be available for purchase. Pets are welcome at all restaurants in the Square that have outdoor seating.
