Tall ships bring maritime history to life at Jack London Square

Lady Washington, Hawaiian Chieftain are docked at Jack London Square through March 16

Oakland, CA – (February 27, 2016): Two tall ships, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, are in port at Jack London Square at the foot of Broadway. The sailing vessels are reflective of what trade and transportation looked like in the mid-1700's to the late 1800's. Both ships will remain docked at the foot of Broadway until March 16, 2017.

Visitors can take a dockside tour of the ships for a small donation to the “floating museums.” They will hear from crew about the challenges of moving passengers and cargo across the seas in North America hundreds of years ago. There are also opportunities to participate in ticketed sailing adventures and simulated battles on the San Francisco Bay.

Built of steel in Hawaii in 1988 and originally designed for cargo trade among the Hawaiian Islands, the Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of the Atlantic coastal sailing vessels in the latter half of the 1800s. She’s a swift topsail ketch that has visited Tahiti, the Atlantic Ocean, and once sailed out of Sausalito, Calif. Lady Washington is a living reminder of the first American vessel to make landfall on the West Coast of North America in 1788. Lady Washington has appeared in several motion pictures and television shows, including Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Star Trek: Generations, Once Upon A Time, and Revolution.

The tall ships are part of the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (GHHSA) and the ship’s crew provides a variety of hands-on educational experiences. For more information on public tours and sailing schedules please go to: http://historicalseaport.org.
