Oakland International sees 41 percent more international passengers in January 2018
New flights and destinations attracted 4.5 percent more travelers overall
Oakland, CA: (February 28, 2018) – Officials at Oakland International (OAK) report today that new operations helped to drive a 41% year-over-year increase in January international passenger volume at the Airport. New international service from Southwest, Norwegian Air, British Airways, and LEVEL helped to account for the 16,340 additional international travelers at OAK compared with January 2017. Total passenger traffic at the Airport reached 949,489 in January 2018, up 4.5% from 908,898 total passengers during the same period in the prior year.
Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland said, “We have sustained considerable growth in Oakland over the last several years in terms of the number of passengers served and destinations offered. It is ever more apparent that our customers and airline partners alike are increasingly looking to OAK for both domestic and international air service opportunities.”
International activity at OAK further increases as Norwegian Air began service to Rome on February 6, 2018, and will commence service to Paris, France, on April 10.
“We continually hear about the convenience and reliability of OAK from passengers, and with Southwest, Norwegian, and British Airways placing enhanced international focus in Oakland, we expect our numbers to continue to grow,” said Francis.
Regional airlines are also demonstrating interest in Oakland. Also on April 10, 2018, Contour Air will become the newest air carrier at OAK, offering daily service to Del Norte County Regional Airport (CEC). CEC, located in Crescent City, CA, has been without a commercial air carrier since August 2017. CEC Airport Director Matthew Leitner identified the Bay Area as a destination with “great demand,” addressing the connectivity provided by OAK in a statement, noting, “Oakland is a Southwest Airlines focus city, which means that Southwest offers numerous flights from Oakland as an alternative to SFO.”
