Oakland Airport celebrates Southwest Airlines’ five years of service to Hawaii

Oakland, Calif. – March 20, 2024: On Monday, Oakland International Airport (OAK) celebrated the five-year anniversary of service to Hawaii with Southwest Airlines. To commemorate the anniversary, the airport treated passengers to live music, hula performances, and a balloon arch to see off the morning’s departing flights to Hawaii. Since the launch of Southwest Airline’s Hawaii service five years ago in 2019, nearly 1.3 million passengers have flown between Oakland and Hawaii on Southwest.

“Thank you to Southwest Airlines for the valuable service to Hawaii that they have offered here at OAK for the past five years,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “This service offers convenient and affordable options for East Bay residents visiting the islands as well as Hawaiians coming here to visit the San Francisco Bay Area.”

In March 2019, Southwest Airlines chose OAK as the first airport at which to debut their new service to Hawaii, beginning with daily nonstops to Honolulu and Kahului. Today, the airline offers six daily departures to four different Hawaiian Islands from OAK with routes to Honolulu (Oahu), Kahului (Maui), Lihue (Kauai), and Kailua-Kona (Hawaii Island).

Southwest Airlines operated over 4,200 flights between Oakland and Hawaii in 2023. Southwest also offers interisland flights that fit well with OAK’s schedules to ensure a seamless travel experience across the four islands they serve. This makes it easy for passengers to connect or plan to visit multiple islands on their trip.
