Airport recovery underway as passengers more than double from April to May

Oakland, CA(June 16, 2020) –  Oakland International Airport (OAK) today announced that newly-released data for May 2020 show passenger traffic activity inching up from April. The Airport counted 105,593 passengers for the month, more than double the 45,819 passengers in April. Traffic is still 91.2% behind the same period in 2019.

The upward trend is expected to continue through June 2020 with Southwest Airlines increasing its flight schedule at OAK by about 25 daily departures to more than 60 in total – still half compared with one year ago.  Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Volaris are also expected to increase flights through the summer.

Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis said, “I’m very pleased to see passenger traffic returning, and credit my team for its active engagement throughout the recent unprecedented declines. Our terminals and operations are in great shape, and we are focused on ensuring that as passengers continue to return, that they enjoy the safe, efficient experience they have come to expect and love at OAK.”

The Airport’s Resiliency Task Force continues to assess, plan, and deliver the Airport’s responses and recovery in the wake of COVID-19. Updates include floor-markings, face-covering requirements, seat-spacing to allow social distancing, plexiglass guards at ticketing and check-in counters, and state-of-the-art cleaning and disinfecting systems.

With the summer travel season now underway, the Airport said that it is seeing an increase in scheduled weekly departures; numbers of screened passengers at security checkpoints are also increasing.
