More than 1,000 bicyclists to roll out from Jack London Square Sunday

Oakland, CA (Sept. 28, 2017)Jack London Square will be filled with some 1,200 bicyclists this Sunday for the Oakland Gran Fondo, an event with multiple bike rides of varying lengths. Moderate to advanced riders of all ages will select one of four touring experiences that all begin and end at the Oakland waterfront.

“Jack London Square is the perfect venue for the kick-off and finish line of these rides because it’s a beautiful location and a family-friendly, fun place to be,” said event organizer Ryan Coelho. “Bike East Bay was selected as the non-profit beneficiary of this event because of the great work they’ve been doing to make biking more accessible all across the East Bay,” added Coelho.

Gran Fondo is a long-distance road-cycling event where a large number of cyclists ride a marked route.  The four rides in Oakland’s urban setting are not races, but an opportunity for the public to experience bicycling around the East Bay at a level that is enjoyable and potentially challenging for those who participate in the longest rides.

All the rides begin on Water Street next to the Marina Lawn adjacent to 55 Harrison Street.

The longest rides of 70 and 55 miles will begin at 7 AM and the 28-mile event starts at 7:30 AM. The 13.5-mile, family-friendly ride starts at 9 AM and will tour around Lake Merritt. The toughest ride will be the Vaste Fondo, which is 70 miles and includes an elevation gain of 7,405 feet.

There will be an Expo on the Marina Lawn the day before the event, Saturday, Sept. 30, from 11 AM to 5 PM with bicycling-related vendors. One can register to participate at the Expo, online, or the day of the rides, October 1, about an hour before the start time of the ride of choice.
