Port of Oakland Handles 173,818 TEUs in August as Exports Rise from July

Full exports increase 2.9 percent from July; loaded cargo down 2.5 percent year to date

Oakland, Calif. – September 23, 2026: The Port of Oakland handled 173,818 TEUs (twenty-foot containers) in August, with full exports increasing 2.9 percent from July. Year-to-date loaded cargo remains relatively stable, down 2.5 percent compared with the same period in 2025.

Combined loaded cargo totaled 131,666 TEUs in August, down 9.0 percent from the same month last year. Empty container volume totaled 42,152 TEUs, down 11.4 percent year over year.

Through August, the Port has handled 1,468,482 total TEUs, down 4.5 percent from the same period in 2025. Loaded cargo is down 2.5 percent year to date, with full imports down 4.6 percent and full exports up 0.2 percent. Empty container movements are down 11.4 percent through August.

“Our loaded cargo volumes remain relatively stable year to date, with exports slightly ahead of last year, and we’re focused on building on that foundation,” said Port of Oakland Acting Maritime Director Jason Garben. “We’re working closely with our ocean carrier, shipper, and terminal partners to identify opportunities to grow cargo through Oakland and give more customers reasons to choose this gateway.”

The Port recorded 82 vessel calls in August, compared with 90 in August 2025.
