The Port of Oakland is a steward to a diverse array of public assets. From maritime, aviation, and commercial real estate facilities, to public parks and wetlands, the Port is committed to enhancing public resources, building a thriving economy, reducing negative environmental impacts, and building resilient infrastructure.
The Port is a demonstrated leader in implementing progressive environmental and sustainable initiatives aimed to reduce air and stormwater pollution, transition to 100% zero emissions technologies, recycle and reuse construction materials, and protect the Oakland shoreline and its natural habitats.
Environmental Compliance & Permitting
The Port manages regulatory programs and permitting for Port operations, maintenance, and improvement projects within the Port jurisdiction. The Port also oversees environmental hazardous materials management and remediation and building & development permits.
Planning
The Port conducts environmental planning and assessment as Lead Agency or/and Responsible Agency pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and review under the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). The Port also conducts transportation and land use planning and technical studies to support our current and long-range planning efforts and reactivation of waterfront properties and business park areas.
Sustainability & Climate Resilience
The Port promotes sustainability in its planning, management, development, and operations. Key initiatives have included implementing zero emission initiatives, waste reduction and reuse of materials, assessment of sea level rise and groundwater intrusion, and seeking grant funding opportunities to support the advancement of the Port’s sustainable initiatives.

Clean Ports Program
$322 Million Clean Ports Program Grant
The Port has been awarded significant investment from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The Clean Ports Program represents a strategic effort to transition U.S. ports toward zero-emission operations, reduce environmental impacts, and enhance public health while supporting economic growth and infrastructure modernization.
