Derrick Muhammad has devoted his career to uplifting his community through legal advocacy, civic engagement, and public service. With over 20 years of experience as a member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), he served in key leadership roles—including Business Agent and Secretary-Treasurer—where he negotiated labor agreements, fought for equitable working conditions, and promoted safety initiatives empowering workers and their families.

An attorney with a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Davis, Derrick brings his legal expertise to champion fair employment practices, expand access to job training, and advance long-term economic opportunities—especially for underserved communities in Alameda County.

Derrick’s commitment to equity extends to serving on the boards of Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency and Youth Uprising, helping to shape programs that strengthen local economies and create inclusive pathways to employment.

A proud Oakland native and graduate of Fremont High School, Derrick Muhammad continues to lead with purpose, passion, and a deep-rooted dedication to social justice.
