Seaport Logistics Complex

The Port of Oakland and its business partners are building new facilities designed to increase Oakland’s container throughput.

The largest, most eagerly anticipated newbuild at the Port is scheduled to come online in 2020. It’s the 460,000-square-foot first building at Oakland’s Seaport Logistics Complex. The Port reached final agreement in January 2018 with industrial real estate giant CenterPoint Properties to construct the building. Ground prep began on the site last fall. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2019.

CenterPoint’s building is envisioned as a distribution center where cargo transfers from ships to trucks or trains. The Port sees it as the first building in a one-of-a-kind logistics campus. The allure for shippers: all cargo handling is done inside the Port, saving time and expense. The benefit for Oakland: the agreement with CenterPoint ensures that additional container volume will cross the Port’s docks.

More cargo for the Port should result in more jobs for Oakland. CenterPoint has committed to local hiring at its facility.

The Seaport Logistics Complex will arise on land the Port inherited from the U.S. Army. The property – once a military supply depot – is located next to marine terminals and a new railyard. The Port has spent more than a decade planning development. No other U.S. port has Oakland’s advantage of buildable land available for logistics infrastructure.
