Investing in youth

The Port of Oakland understands that the region’s future depends upon a well-prepared and well-trained workforce.

Every summer, the Port’s Summer College Internship Program offers students real-world experience in the Port’s daily operations. These paid internships give participants the opportunity to work in the Port’s Maritime, Aviation, and Commercial Real Estate businesses. Interns have a “hands on” opportunity to work on the major projects with key staff as well as benefit from Port-sponsored professional development opportunities.

The Port also provides graduating high school seniors scholarships to prepare for college or vocational training. The Port awarded approximately $50,000 in scholarships in 2018, and a total of $1.2 million over the past twenty years to more than 500 students.
