Preserving Public Access to Shorelands
It sounds funny, but we take play very seriously here in the Bay Area. Maybe it’s because our temperate climate allows for comfortable outdoor activity year round. We treasure our outdoor venues and open space. The Port has been the steward of 20 miles of Oakland waterfront property along the San Francisco Bay granted by the State Tidelands Trust, safeguarding these precious areas for public use.
As population density increases, these recreational venues become even more valued. Thanks to vigilant Port oversight, waterway treasures like Lake Merritt, Middle Harbor Shoreline Park and most of the Oakland Estuary remain accessible to everyone for recreation, scientific study and endless inspiration. And more public parkland will be added as the former Oakland Army Base is developed and brought on line.
