5th Avenue Overhead Seismic Retrofit Project
Project Location
In Oakland at the 5th Avenue Overhead on I-880 from 10th Avenue to Oak Street.
General Project Description
The 5th Avenue Overhead on I-880 is to be replaced. Several freeway ramps and local streets will be modified/reconstructed to accommodate the new structure. The new structure will follow the same alignment and general profile of the existing structure and will be approximately 46 feet wider. The additional width will provide for freeway shoulders and a southbound auxiliary lane from the Oak Street on-ramp. The southbound auxiliary lane is a separately approved project and is being added to this project for construction purposes.
Purpose and Need
The existing structure is vulnerable to damage in the event of a major earthquake. It was determined that it is better to replace the structure rather than to retrofit the existing bridge.
Funding Status
The project is programmed in the SHOPP (State Highway Operations and Protection Program) in the 2004/5 fiscal year.
Estimated Cost
Bridge $85,000,000
District $16,500,000
R/W $4,200,000
Total: $105,700,000
Proposed Construction Schedule
Begin Construction January 2005
Complete Construction January 2010
Significant Issues
Impacts to Union Pacific Railroad facilities as well as impacts to Port of Oakland property as it relates to the Port’s redevelopment plans for the waterfront area. An existing Art Building near the project site owned by Peralta Community College District is proposed to be replaced and relocated. The project will provide for a clear span over the Lake Merritt Channel and will remove the existing bridge columns from the Channel.
