SPIRIT AIRLINES ADDS SERVICE FROM OAKLAND TO DETROIT AND BALTIMORE

Service increase moves carrier to the #2 airline position at OAK

Press Releases, Airport
May 25th, 2017

OAKLAND, CA – (May 25, 2017): Today, Spirit Airlines adds two cities to its roster of destinations from Oakland International Airport (OAK). The Fort Lauderdale-based airline commences nonstop service to Baltimore (BWI) and Detroit (DTW), with daily departures scheduled at 4:45PM and 11:55PM, respectively.

Customers flying cross-country from OAK to BWI will now have a choice of carriers as Spirit joins Southwest Airlines in that market. Southwest will operate as many as two flights daily to BWI in summer 2017.

Spirit’s Baltimore flight will operate on an Airbus A319, and Detroit will operate on a mixture of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.

The new service will result in Spirit rising to become OAK’s second largest carrier as measured by departure seats, behind Southwest, which holds over 70% of OAK’s market share. With the new flights, Spirit, which returned to OAK in 2012, will serve a total of 7 nonstop destinations with 11 daily flights in summer 2017, including:

  • Baltimore/Washington DC - 1
  • Detroit - 1
  • Chicago-O’Hare - 1
  • Dallas/Fort Worth - 1
  • Houston Intercontinental - 1
  • Las Vegas - 2
  • Los Angeles - 4

“With these new service additions, Spirit greatly improves the convenience of reaching Baltimore on the East Coast and Detroit in the Great Lakes Region for those originating in the Bay Area,” said Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland. “Bay Area residents expect this type of connectivity, given Oakland’s position as a gateway to the businesses, tourism venues, and all that the region has to offer.”

"We're excited to expand our growing network with more flight options from Oakland International,” said Paul Berry, Spirit Airlines' Director of Corporate Communications. "These new nonstop flights to Baltimore/Washington and Detroit, combined with our ultra-low fares, will give the people of the Bay Area and Northern California the opportunity to travel to two more fun cities and keep more money in the pocket to enjoy in these great destinations.”

Spirit Airlines serves the San Francisco Bay Area exclusively at Oakland International.
