Strong Passenger Growth Continues at OAK through Summer 2015; More Growth Expected For Fall

Now 22 Consecutive Months of Passenger Growth for the San Francisco Bay Area Airport

Oakland, CA - October 30, 2015: Oakland International Airport ended the peak summer travel season with over one million passengers using the airport in August, a 5.1% increase in passenger traffic compared to August 2014. Growth continued as fall began in September with an 8.26% increase for the month compared to the same month a year earlier.

A breakdown of enplaned, deplaned, and total passengers per month is as follows:

Enplaned Deplaned Total
August 515,742 528,814 1,044,556
September 466,697 461,969 928,666

"We had a busy summer at OAK as passengers filled seats on new and existing flights during our first summer with the air-rail connection to BART," said Kristi McKenney, Port of Oakland Acting Director of Aviation. "As we moved into the typically less busy fall season we still saw robust growth compared to last year and we look forward to that continuing as new flights to Atlanta and Los Angeles are introduced in November."

Air mail and freight were down year over year in August by 3.67% with 92.7 million pounds shipped. This rebounded in September increasing 1.37% year over year with 97.4 million pounds shipped through OAK.

Traffic at the Oakland International Airport Station on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) regional rail system is up 36.48% thus far in 2015 compared to the AirBART shuttle bus that the trains replaced in November 2014.

OAK traffic is expected to continue to increase as new daily nonstop flights to Atlanta are added by Southwest Airlines on November 1st and Spirit Airlines adds double daily service to Los Angeles (LAX) on November 12th.
