Oakland International Airport sees 9.9% more passengers in June

OAK surges into summer with sustained growth pattern

Press Releases, Airport
August 1st, 2016

Oakland, CA: (August 1, 2016) – A busy summer travel season has lifted passenger traffic at Oakland International Airport to a six-year high. The Airport reported today that 1,113,508 travelers passed through its terminal gates in June. It was the most passengers in a single month since March 2008.

The Airport said passenger traffic was up 9.9 percent, or 100,023 travelers, in June compared to the same period last year. It was the 31st consecutive month of growth at the Airport.

“The airport is pleased at this ongoing growth trend during the already-busy summer travel season,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis. “Our airline partners continue to introduce new flights domestically and internationally, and as a result, our nonstop reach is stronger than ever. These healthy numbers indicate more travelers are enjoying these additions and are making OAK their airport of choice.”

With several recent announcements of new routes and new destinations, growth at OAK has been a resounding theme. Since June 2015, Southwest, Oakland’s largest airline tenant, has added 13 daily departures to 8 different cities, including the launch of Long Beach (LGB), Reno-Tahoe (RNO), and St. Louis (STL), announced in June. Allegiant Air last week announced new service with five weekly nonstop flights to Las Vegas.

OAK remains the fastest growing airport in the Bay Area over the past 12 months, at 8.0% growth during the timeframe.
