(Oakland, Calif.) - August 14, 2006 - The Port of Oakland welcomed the second of Evergreen Marine Corporation’s newest “green” vessels this week. The Hatsu Smile arrived Monday, August 14, 2006 at the Oakland seaport. This vessel meets and exceeds some of the strictest global environmental standards and was designed with key environmentally friendly features.
“We congratulate Evergreen on their second green ship to call the Port of Oakland,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Jerry Bridges. “When Hatsu Smart first arrived two weeks ago, we applauded a maritime leader in environmental innovation.”
This new, S-type container vessel has a double-skin hull design, which helps prevent marine accidents like oil spills. The Hatsu Smile also uses the latest low-sulphur fuel system, advanced oil/water separators, environmentally-friendly Freon, and large, high-temperature incinerators. Additionally, Evergreen also uses a new tin-free, anti-corrosive coating that sustains our oceans. This next generation design also positions the oil tanks in between cargo holds and above the tanktop in order to minimize the likelihood of a fuel spill in the event of an accident.
“Environmental responsibility is fundamental to the way we do business at the Port of Oakland. Evergreen is certainly one of the industry leaders using the latest technology to minimize environmental impacts of shipping,” commented Port of Oakland Maritime Director Wilson Lacy. “We’re excited that they are bringing their newest green vessels to the Oakland seaport.”
The Hatsu Smile can hold 7,024 twenty equivalent unit (TEUs) containers. With an overall length of 1000 feet and a beam of 140 feet, the S-class vessels are able to carry containers 17 rows across the deck and 15 rows across below deck. Hatsu Smile has a deadweight of 78,700 tons on a service draft of 46 feet.
Evergreen’s Hatsu Smile is one of four vessels completed in a series of a fleet of ten “green” vessels being built for Evergreen’s maritime business. All of these ship design improvements benefit the environment both globally and locally.
