When: Tuesday morning 8:30 a.m. (opening flag ceremony);
Conference scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday (October
15), and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday (October 16)
Why: The Pan Pacific Conference was first held
in Oakland in 1982 to create better communication and understanding
of the issues facing the international trade and transportation
community. In that year 6 ports agreed to meet every 2 years to
discuss the future of the industry.
OAKLAND, Calif, (October 15, 2002) - The 2002
Pan Pacific conference is an international meeting of key figures
in international trade from around the world, many of whom have
never presented before in the Western Hemisphere. The event occurs
every two years. This year the Port of Oakland is honored to be
hosting the prestigious conference at the Oakland Marriott City
Center, this Tuesday and Wednesday, October 15 and 16, 2002. The
conference's six founding ports are: Port of Dalian, China; Port
of Shanghai, China; Port of Melbourne, Australia; Port of Yokohama,
Japan; Port of Vancouver, Canada; and of course the Port of Oakland,
USA.
The Pan Pacific Conference will open the morning of Tuesday October
15th with a flag ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Presentations include Lon
Hatamiya, Secretary of the State of California’s Technology,
Trade and Commerce Agency and Rodney Slater, former Secretary
of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
