OAKLAND, Calif. (September 6, 2002) - The Port
of Oakland will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, Wednesday, September
11, 2002 beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Pavilion Stage outside of
Barnes & Noble in Jack London Square (at the foot of Broadway).
The ceremony will be held not only to remember the tragic events
of 9/11, but also to celebrate our community, friends and family.
This is an opportunity for our community to continue the healing process with music and song. Taiko and African drummers along with a bagpipe player and the City and Port Choir will be part of this event. The ceremony will also include brief remarks by Port of Oakland officials, the raising of the American flag by Oakland firefighters and an interfaith presentation with local clerics (Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist and Islamic faiths). The public will be invited to join in singing "America the Beautiful".
At the conclusion of the ceremony, visitors may place flowers in an area designated as a 9/11 memorial for that day in Jack London Square.
All are welcome at this cross-cultural and interfaith ceremony, which will offer words of encouragement, thankfulness and a celebration of life.
