May 9, 2002
OAKLAND, Calif (May 9, 2002) - Port of Oakland
President of the Board of Port Commissioners, Phil Tagami, made
a presentation to the Port of a koinobori or carp banner this week.
President Tagami said, "The Port of Oakland operates as an international
hub, and thus we celebrate cultural diversity. We just concluded
honoring Cinco de Mayo this past weekend. During my recent trade
mission to Asia, I became aware of the significance of Children's
Day as an important celebration in Japan. So I brought back a flying
carp banner large enough that we could run it up the flagpole in
Jack London Square."
Phil Tagami just completed a major trade mission to Asia, including a visit with our sister city of Yokohama, Japan. To recognize this important Japanese tradition, the Port of Oakland is flying this gift from President Tagami, as well as additional koi banners on loan to the Port from the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California. The koi represents traits such as courage, strength, and perseverance. The carp banners are on display through Friday, May 10th, in Jack London Square.
