Port of Oakland's Board of Port Commissioners
approved the appointment of Jerry Bridges to the position of Maritime
Director Tuesday, September 4, 2001. Mr. Bridges will oversee all maritime operations including expansion
of the major marine terminals as part of Vision 2000.
Jerry Bridges joins the Port team after serving as the Northern
California Vice President with Marine Terminals Corporations (MTC).
Mr. Bridges also spent two years with MTC as Terminal Manager
at the Ben E. Nutter Container Terminal in Oakland.
"Jerry Bridges brings a wealth of experience to the Port
through an impressive career that has been characterized by a
tremendous understanding of the maritime industry. We are very
fortunate to have him join our senior management team," said
Phil Tagami, President of the Board of Port Commissioners.
As Vice President with Marine Terminals Corporations, Mr. Bridges
developed strategic plans, managed an $80 million a year budget
and directed a staff of 85 employees. As Terminal Manager, he
managed the successful expansion of the terminal and the transition
of the Evergreen America operations from Pier 96 in San Francisco
to Oakland. Mr. Bridges also managed port operations for five
years as Port Manager for Sea Land Services where he was responsible
for the terminal, marine, and vessel operations for the company
in two different Ports.
As Maritime Director, Mr. Bridges will report to both the Deputy
Director and Executive Director while managing the day-to-day
maritime operations of the Port. Deputy Executive Director Tay
Yoshitani (who will also become the Port's new Executive Director
in October) said, "I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Bridges
to the Port of Oakland and we look forward to the perspective
and expertise he'll bring to our upcoming and on-going projects."
Mr. Bridges holds a bachelor of science degree from Appalachian
State University, North Carolina and served as an officer for
the United States Marine Corps for five years where he achieved
the rank of captain. He moved to Oakland in 1991, when Sea Land
Services transferred him to the region to continue serving as
Port Manager. Jerry Bridges replaces former Maritime Director
Ray Boyle who will continue to serve in the Maritime Division.
