Port of Oakland Appoints Jerry Bridges as Maritime Director
Port of Oakland's Board of Port Commissioners approved the appointment of Jerry Bridges to the position of Maritime Director Tuesday, September 4, 2001. Mr. Bridges will oversee all maritime operations including expansion of the major marine terminals as part of Vision 2000.
Jerry Bridges joins the Port team after serving as the Northern California Vice President with Marine Terminals Corporations (MTC). Mr. Bridges also spent two years with MTC as Terminal Manager at the Ben E. Nutter Container Terminal in Oakland.
"Jerry Bridges brings a wealth of experience to the Port through an impressive career that has been characterized by a tremendous understanding of the maritime industry. We are very fortunate to have him join our senior management team," said Phil Tagami, President of the Board of Port Commissioners.
As Vice President with Marine Terminals Corporations, Mr. Bridges developed strategic plans, managed an $80 million a year budget and directed a staff of 85 employees. As Terminal Manager, he managed the successful expansion of the terminal and the transition of the Evergreen America operations from Pier 96 in San Francisco to Oakland. Mr. Bridges also managed port operations for five years as Port Manager for Sea Land Services where he was responsible for the terminal, marine, and vessel operations for the company in two different Ports.
As Maritime Director, Mr. Bridges will report to both the Deputy Director and Executive Director while managing the day-to-day maritime operations of the Port. Deputy Executive Director Tay Yoshitani (who will also become the Port's new Executive Director in October) said, "I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Bridges to the Port of Oakland and we look forward to the perspective and expertise he'll bring to our upcoming and on-going projects."
Mr. Bridges holds a bachelor of science degree from Appalachian State University, North Carolina and served as an officer for the United States Marine Corps for five years where he achieved the rank of captain. He moved to Oakland in 1991, when Sea Land Services transferred him to the region to continue serving as Port Manager. Jerry Bridges replaces former Maritime Director Ray Boyle who will continue to serve in the Maritime Division.
