Parking Will be in Short Supply at Oakland International Airport this Holiday Weekend
Use Alternate Sources of Transportation
Oakland International Airport expects that demand for on-airport parking will be high this holiday weekend due to the nearly 250,000 people expected to travel though the airport over the holiday period that runs from Thursday, August 30 through Tuesday, September 4. The heaviest travel days will be August 30 and 31, and September 3 and 4. An average day at Oakland International Airport is about 37,000 travelers per day.
"Labor Day weekend marks the close of summer and the beginning of a new school year, so a lot of people will be taking advantage of the long weekend, whether they travel by air, road or rail," said airport spokesperson Cyndy Johnson. "Travelers should expect heavier than normal traffic on the interstate highway system throughout the San Francisco Bay Area region, so extra time should be planned for getting to and from the airport."
With passenger traffic up over 14 percent for the first six months of the year and on-airport lots filling up even on non-holiday weekends, travelers are urged to use the ground transportation options (BART/AirBART, ACTransit, regional shuttles, taxis and limousines) available to them, or have friends or family members drop them off or pick them up, Johnson added.
Anyone requiring assistance with regional ground transportation fare and schedule information, or for updated information on Bay Area roadway conditions and closures can call the TravInfo Hotline at 817-1717, from any Bay Area area code or visit the Ground Transportation pages on the airport's Web site at www.oaklandairport.com.
Also, airport officials recommend that travelers arrive at least an hour and a half prior to their air carrier's scheduled departure to provide sufficient time to get through the check-in and security checkpoint processes, or to find a parking space should they choose to drive. Passengers eighteen and older must present a photo ID upon check-in.
Travelers can call the Oakland International Airport 24-Hour Parking Hotline at (510) 633-2572 for general parking information and space availability. Once at the airport, travelers should watch for roadway signage at the entrance to the airport that will direct them to the lots with available space. Travelers may also visit the airport's Web site at www.oaklandairport.com and look for banner messages indicating parking availability and parking options.
Oakland International Airport, a revenue division of the Port of Oakland, served more than 10.6 million passengers and handled more than 700,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2000. Oakland has more than 190 flights per day on 12 domestic and international carriers to 31 nonstop destinations, including the Hawaiian Islands, the New York area, Paris, Tahiti and Mexico. New service in 2001 includes two daily flights to Las Vegas and four flights a week to Kona on Aloha Airlines; a nightly flight to Detroit on Spirit Airlines; one additional flight each to the New York area on JetBlue Airways and Continental Airlines; and two daily flights to Atlanta on Delta Air Lines.
Other new service expected this fall includes nonstop flights to the Mexican resort cities of Cancun/Cozumel, Los Cabos and Puerta Vallarta on SunTrips; a daily flight to New Orleans on Southwest Airlines; an additional flight to New York/JFK on JetBlue Airways; and a daily flight each to the Washington, D.C. area on JetBlue Airways and United Airlines.
The airport is just beginning its $1.5 billion expansion program that includes the addition of 12 passenger gates, a six-lane parkway into the airport from I-880, a two-level roadway, a consolidated terminal building and a multi-level parking facility.
Oakland International consistently has the best on-time record in the Bay Area, according to statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is the only Bay Area airport with a dedicated shuttle bus that meets every Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system train at the nearby Coliseum station. On-airport parking rates are $18 per day in the long-term lot and $15 per day in the economy/overflow lots. Visit the airport's Web site at www.oaklandairport.com for more information.
