June 6, 2001 Oakland's New Hanjin Terminal
Readies for Opening
The Hanjin Terminal, Oakland's newest
marine container facility, will welcome its first vessel the HANJIN
BEIJING V.067 on Monday June 18th to officially inaugurate operations.
The United Alliance partners, Hanjin Shipping Company, Senator Lines,
and Sinotrans will shift operations from the Ben E. Nutter Terminal
to the Hanjin Terminal on that date.
Operated by Marine Terminals Corporation,
the new facility will initially open with 35.6 hectares (88 acres)
of yard space and 731 meters (2,400 feet) of berth. The facility
will ultimately expand to 48.5 hectares (120 acres). The new Hanjin
Terminal is the first of two container terminals to be completed
as part of Oakland's Vision 2000 expansion program to boost
capacity, improve intermodal rail connections, and deepen berths
and channels to -50 feet.
The Hanjin Terminal is served by four
super-Panamax class container cranes manufactured by ZPMC of Shanghai,
China, each with the capacity to lift over sixty metric tons and
with a sixty-five meter outreach, capable of working vessels up
to twenty-two containers wide. There are a total of 332 reefer plugs,
and 1,231 parking slots in addition to container stacking capabilities.
Annual container capacity exceeds 200,000 lifts per year, and near-dock
intermodal connections are available within 1.5 kilometers (1 mile)
of the terminal.
Normal business hours are 8:00 AM
to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, with 4:00 PM cut-off for dual
transactions and 4:15 PM for bobtails.
