April 20, 2001 Port Of Oakland Offers Free
Harbor Tours To See Giant Cranes And Maritime Operations
Every year the Port of Oakland offers
the public a rare glimpse of its maritime operations. This year's
Annual Harbor Tours begin on Wednesday April 25th, 2001 during one
of the Port's most exciting times in its history. Passengers will
get a chance to see the giant cranes that were delivered to the
Port last October.
The Port of Oakland is the fourth
largest and busiest container port in the country and demand for
port services is escalating. The Port of Oakland is expanding over
the next five years to meet that need. The new cranes are symbolic
of this tremendous expansion project.
Each narrated tour includes Port history
and the Port's expansion plans for the future. The tour aboard a
Red and White Charter takes about ninety (90) minutes and travels
through the Oakland inner harbor.
Individuals and groups of up to 50
are invited to reserve space aboard the vessels. School groups of
4th graders and above are welcome to reserve space. Boarding time
is 30 minutes prior to departure.
Tour dates and times are as follows:
Reservations can be made by calling (510) 627-1188.
You may also e-mail your request to jadam@portoakland.com.
Due to capacity limits for each tour, please note
that reservations must be made in advance of boarding (at least
48 hours prior to each tour).
* May 19, 2001 PortFest tour. No reservations will be taken. Boarding will be on a first-come-first-served basis. On May 19th, tickets will be available at Oakland Ferry Terminal (located off Clay Street, in front of the Port building in Jack London Square) at 10:00 a.m. for the noon tour and at noon for the 2:00 p.m. tour. Departure times may vary, as much as a 1/2 hour, due to PortFest activities. Again, these harbor tours are free to the
public. |
