Port of Oakland Wins Top Awards for Best Real Estate Deals
(Oakland Telecommunications Access Center wins "Best Industrial Deal" and
The Landing at Jack London Square recognized as Finalist in "Best Residential Deal")
Port of Oakland received a first place award for the Oakland Telecommunications Access Center by Mortenson Development at the "Real Estate Deals of the Year Awards 2000", held last Thursday night March 22, 2001. The event presented by the San Francisco Business Times highlighted the outstanding developments in five Bay Area counties for the year. The telecom center in the Jack London District of Oakland garnered the top spot for the "Best Industrial Deal".
"The telecommunications center is more proof that the Port of Oakland offers prime property in the Bay Area for technology companies looking to relocate," stated Chuck Foster, Port of Oakland Executive Director. Foster said, "The Oakland Telecommunications Access Center is part of Oakland's economic rebirth. The transformation of the site along Third and Brush streets into a high-powered telecommunications center will attract other tech companies to the neighborhood that require sophisticated telecom access."
Mortenson Development Group will spend $30 million for its four-story, 113,000 square-foot building. Construction will be finished in May. "Mortenson is honored that our Oakland Telecommunications Access Center received the award for Best Industrial Deal of the Year," said James Fey, Mortenson Project Director. Fey stated, "This telecom center built from the ground up is a great example of the kind of project that can be produced when the Developer, City, related governmental agencies-in this case the Port of Oakland-and the Community recognize and are sensitive to each others needs."

The Landing at Jack London Square by Legacy Partners is part of Oakland's revitalization of the housing market. The residential development was selected as a finalist for the "Best Residential" Oakland award. The Landing at Jack London Square (101 Embarcadero West) is a residential development with 282 apartment units on the waterfront. It offers studios, 1 and 2 bedrooms, a clubhouse, an exercise facility, spa and a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool.
"We are very excited to be part of the Jack London Square neighborhood that is a strong residential village and supportive of the excellent retail and entertainment district which currently exists at Jack London Square," remarked John McMorrow with Legacy Partners.

Other Awards - Simeon Commercial picked up the "Best Office Sale" in Oakland award for its purchase of 180 Grand Avenue in a bidding war. Simeon is also developing Metroport, which will anchor the Hegenberger Corridor - an area being developed by the Port of Oakland and the City. The Metroport plan is for 1.6 million square feet of Class A office space and a 300-room hotel in a multi-phased project costing upwards of $200 million.
Ellis Partners was selected as a finalist in the Best Rehab/Renovation category for redeveloping environmentally challenged Emerytech. Ellis Partners is also the master developer for Jack London Square Phase II. The Port of Oakland's Commercial Real Estate Division (CRE) wants to expand Jack London Square's role as a premier entertainment and business venue in the East Bay.
Port of Oakland's CRE Director Omar Benjamin negotiated the Oakland Telecommunications Access Center deal on behalf of the Port and the City of Oakland, "All our partners in ongoing development are quality key players in the industry. They are essential to the realization of our plans to transform the waterfront into an area that meets the needs of Oaklanders and the region. We are only as good as our team and we have a great team."
