The Port of Oakland joins Oakland City Council President Ignacio de la Fuente and other members of the business community in a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an extraordinary hotel, the first of its kind in Oakland, to be built near Jack London Square.
The 140-suite hotel, a national brand of Hilton's Homewood Suites, will provide residential-style suites with fully equipped kitchens and separate sleeping and living areas for a price comparable to an ordinary hotel room.
Adam Dubroff of developer Oakland Hospitality expressed his delight to bring this unique brand of hotel accommodations to Oakland and noted its broad interest, "The Homewood Suites appeal to business travelers that stay for a few nights or more, families vacationing with children and visitors seeking a weekend get-away retreat."
"We're thrilled that Oakland will pave the way to accommodate the needs of the modern traveler and continue to feed the growing appetite of the city's thriving business and tourism community," said Oakland City Council President Ignacio de la Fuente.
The hotel will be constructed on the site at 1103 Embarcadero, Oakland, just South of Jack London Square. There is easy access to highway 880 along with a 40-slip boat marina and boardwalk. The facility will include a hospitality center, an executive business center and exercise facilities. Each suite features a fully equipped kitchen, two televisions, two telephones with data ports and more.
"This groundbreaking is another concrete example of the progress at the Port of Oakland. We are transforming our vision into reality by offering a changing waterfront to meet the needs of all our visitors. We are delighted that Homewood Suites by Hilton is coming to our flourishing Jack London Square neighborhood. This is one of the high quality businesses and necessary elements to create a waterfront that offers a full spectrum of amenities," said Omar Benjamin, Port of Oakland's Director of Commercial Real Estate.
The Homewood Suites by Hilton in Oakland is being developed by Oakland Hospitality LLC and will be managed by Hilton Hotels Corporation. The hotel contractor is Summit Builders of Phoenix. The project has been approved for $1.0 million in HUD financing through the City of Oakland and permanent financing through GE Capital Corporation.
The facility is expected to open October 2001.
