Cable Restoration Project on Washington Street at Jack London Square Begins
A two-month cable restoration project gets underway Wednesday, September 6, 2000 on Washington Street in Jack London Square. Vortex Diving is tentatively scheduled to begin the repair/replacement of a submarine cable for Alameda Power and Cable. The replacement process consists of drilling a horizontal hole from the Oakland side to Alameda and restoring the electrical line. This cable is one of three ties to the P.G.&.E. power grid for Alameda. The cable is primarily used to back up Alameda's electrical system when there is high demand. Alameda Power & Telecom owns the line.
Construction will occur on one short block of Washington Street between Embarcadero West and Water Street. This prohibits vehicle access to the area. Drivers are detoured via a sign at Washington Street to head one block north to Clay Street. From Clay, drivers can turn left (South) onto Water Street to reach the Waterfront Hotel or Tony Roma's. As usual, there is no parking on Water Street. Most of the vehicles entering the area will be dropping off, or picking up passengers at the Waterfront Hotel, or making a local delivery.
A tent will cover the construction area to protect the public and adjacent businesses from construction related activities. The tent will be removed prior to the cable pull, and the staging area will be reduced at that time. The preliminary schedule is as follows:
Schedule:
9/6/00 - 9/8/00 Mobilize Drill Equipment, Build 8' plywood construction fencing around site
9/11/00 -10/3/00 Begin/Complete Drilling
9/26/00 -10/4/00 Install pipe
10/5/00 - 10/6/00 Disassemble tent Demobilize Drill Equipment
10/9/00 - 10/18/00 Construct vault
10/19/00 - 10/27/00 Pull/Splice Cable
10/30/00 - 11/3/00 Demobilization/Cleanup
The normal working hours for this project will be from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The contractor has assured the Port that they will take proper steps to minimize the impact on the businesses in this area and the general public. Please feel free to contact Kimberley Daniels, Property Manager with Oakland Portside Associates, should you have any questions.
