It's another step forward in the Port of Oakland's efforts to generate funding for improving the waterfront. Today the Board of Port Commissioners voted to give its Commercial Real Estate Division (CRE) authorization to sell a 1.3 acre site, within the Oakland Airport Business Park. The property at 7711 Oakport includes a 9,000 square foot building.
The land and building are being sold for $950,000 to Key Source International, currently based in Hayward. Key Source International is moving back to Oakland, where it began over a decade ago. Its principal business is supplying high end, custom keyboards to the Airline, Point of Sale industries and financial markets worldwide. From its new home in Oakland KSI will serve such customers as Continental Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Bloomberg Financial News, Radio Shack, Qantas Airways, Men's Warehouse, Australian Stock Exchange and many more Fortune 1000 companies across the world.
"You can feel the energy in Oakland," says Vice President of sales and marketing, Phil Bruno. "This move makes sense for a company such as ours! Oakland is dedicated to attracting high-tech companies and we want to be a part of it."
The Port of Oakland's Commercial Real Estate Division has been in the process of implementing a previously adopted Restructuring and Development Plan. The plan calls for the sale of certain parcels of land located in the Oakland Airport Business Park. The purpose of the sale is to assist in funding some of the Port's waterfront projects.
"We are very excited to welcome Key Source International to the growing high tech hub in the Hegenberger corridor. They will be joining Zhone and Rainin Instruments, two new companies that have recently located in the Oakland Airport Business Park," said David Kramer, President of the Board of Port Commissioners.
To further enhance these development efforts, the Port and the City of Oakland are jointly funding a $4 million Hegenberger Gateway project that will upgrade landscaping and lighting along Hegenberger Road to create this new gateway to Oakland and the East Bay.
The Port of Oakland, established in 1927, is an independent department of the City of Oakland employing some 560 people. The Port extends approximately 19 miles along the east side of the Oakland Estuary from the border of the city of Emeryville immediately north of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, to the south to the border of the city of San Leandro. Port facilities include four major marine terminal areas covering almost 1000 acres; Oakland International Airport which covers an area of over 2,500 acres; 1,100 acres of commercial, industrial, recreational and other land; 950 acres of underdeveloped land; and about 9,800 surface acres of water area.
