OAKLAND - The Port of Oakland is hosting a Public Meeting for the proposed Remedial Action Plan for the former Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, Oakland (FISCO). The public and all interested parties are invited to attend and participate in the meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 14, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. in the Port of Oakland's Board Room on the 2nd floor.
The Public Meeting will provide opportunity for public review and comment on the environmental work begun by the Navy in 1988 which is now being completed by the Port of Oakland. The Navy's investigation and risk assessment recommends the proposed remedial alternative of no cleanup for soil, and a restriction on groundwater use.
Diane Heinze, the Port's Project Manager for FISCO closure states, " The Port of Oakland, as the local Reuse Authority and now property owner of FISCO, commends the Navy and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for allowing successful and timely reuse of the property. This project will benefit the environmental and economic well-being of the Bay Area."
FISCO is currently under construction for the Port of Oakland's Vision 2000 Project slated for completion in the year 2003. The Vision 2000 Project consists of new marine terminals, a rail facility, roadways and a shoreline park.
The Port of Oakland, established in 1927, is an independent department of the City of Oakland employing some 560 people. The Port extends approximately 19 miles along the east side of the Oakland Estuary from the border of the city of Emeryville immediately north of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, to the south to the border of the city of San Leandro. Port facilities include four major marine terminal areas covering almost 1000 acres; Oakland International Airport which covers an area of over 2,500 acres; 1,100 acres of commercial, industrial, recreational and other land; 950 acres of underdeveloped land; and about 9,800 surface acres of water area.
