L-R: Leonie Bowers, China Shipping Agency (North America) Sean Lindsey, Marine Terminals Corp. Capt. Nawrot Ireneusz, ASIA JADE Master Gary Hallin, Port of Oakland Ty Penny, Marine Terminals Corp. Edgar Marin, China Shipping Agency (North America)
The arrival of the vessel ASIA JADE at Oakland's Ben E. Nutter Terminal has marked the inauguration of China Shipping Container Line's direct liner service linking northern California and the trans-Pacific market. One of the world's fastest growing ocean carriers, China shipping has rapidly expanded their U.S. presence since entering the trade last year. "China Shipping has been providing service to Oakland via their alliance partner Zim Container Service", stated Ray Boyle, Oakland's Director of Maritime, "and by now adding an additional deployment of their own vessels, they have significantly enhanced their commitment to the Bay Area."
Served initially by six 2,000 TEU capacity vessels on a weekly call cycle, arriving at the Nutter Terminal on Wednesdays and sailing Thursdays. The port rotation will be Lianyungang, Qingdao, Shanghai, Hakata, Kobe, Yokohama, Los Angeles, Oakland, Vancouver, and Yokohama. Larger ships of 5,500 TEU capacity are now under construction and will be deployed into this trade lane over the next twelve months.
Headed by Capt. Li Keilin and headquartered in Shanghai, China Shipping Container Line partnered with Norton Lilly International in 1999 to create China Shipping Agency Co. Inc. (North America) to establish an immediate market presence and operations base in the United States. Grove Conrad, president of China Shipping Agency (North America) called the partnership, "An ideal mix of long-term experience with a fresh perspective, combining the strengths to both companies to create the impetus for service and growth. In a very short time, China Shipping has become a major player in the world container trade, and will continue to grow at a rapid pace."
