Oakland, Calif. (November 19, 2003) - The Port of Oakland is inviting the public to pick up a paintbrush and help make a temporary mural at Jack London Square. The mural for FDR Pier is a project of the Port's new Public Art Program in collaboration with the Museum of Children's Art in Oakland. The project involves students from Project Yield who have been exploring the bay environment at the Port's new Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (official park celebration is being scheduled for spring of 2004). Students were taught about the bay's marine environment and created imagery in the form of large medallions that will become part of the mural. Artist Lisa Ostapinski will conduct the creation of the mural. She is a staff artist at MOCHA and lives in West Oakland.
Families and individuals are encouraged to participate in the painting of this mural during any of the following days: this weekend Saturday, November 22, and Sunday November 23 as well as Thanksgiving weekend Friday, Nov. 28, Sat. Nov. 29 and Sunday Nov. 30. from Noon to 4 p.m. All supplies will be provided.
On Nov. 21 the students from Project Yield, who drew the medallions for the mural, will go to the MOCHA office (538 Ninth Street, Suite 210, Oakland) and paint their drawings. The media is welcome to come that afternoon (not for the general public). The artist and students will be there from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
This mural is just one of many projects in the Port's newly launched Public Art Program, which seeks to commission works in a wide range of artistic styles, forms, media, and disciplines that characterize the breadth of contributions an artist can make to the public arena.
