Oakland, Calif. (October 21, 2003) - Port of Oakland's Board of Port Commissioners present the Port's 2003 Sustainability Awards at the Tuesday, October 21, 2003 board meeting in open session at 4pm. (530 Water Street, Board Room, second floor).
"The Port of Oakland is committed to sustainable development," said Port Board President John Protopappas. "Sustainability, sometimes called the triple-bottom-line, incorporates environmental responsibility, social equity, and economic vitality. Every project we're acknowledging meets at least two of those three elements that help the Port better serve our region," added President Protopappas.
2003 Sustainability Awards go to:
Fleet Services, Engineering Division - Aqueous Parts Wash Cabinet;
Airport Environmental Planning and Custodial Staff, Aviation Division - Airport Recycling Program;
Airport Environmental Planning, Aviation Division - Alternative Fuel Program;
Environmental Health and Safety Compliance, Engineering Division - Green Business Program;
Airport Terminal Expansion Team, Engineering Division - Green Design of Oakland International Airport's Terminal 2 Project;
Engineering Design and Services, Engineering Division - Lighting Retrofit at Airport Buildings M-101 and M-102;
And the 2003 Outstanding Sustainability Award goes to:
Engineering Design and Services Department, Engineering Division - The Port of Oakland's Exterior Lighting Policy (Dark Skies)
"We are truly changing the way we build and operate, by considering future generations in our present decisions," said Executive Director Tay Yoshitani. "These awards honor those who have worked on projects that clearly demonstrate effective and creative ways of implementing the Port of Oakland's sustainability policy."
