SOME FLEET WEEK AIRCRAFT BASED AT OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Oakland, Calif. (October 6, 2003) - Fleet Week 2003 returns to the San Francisco Bay Area this week and several civilian aircraft and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds 431 Demonstration Squadron will be based at Oakland International Airport through October 12. The Blue Angels will be based at San Francisco International Airport.
The seven-member Blue Angels team and nine-member Snowbirds team will take practice runs on Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10 during daytime hours. The Fleet Week 2003 program, including the parade of ships and air show, is scheduled for Saturday, October 11 from 11:20 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 12 from 12:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration FAA and Navy developed the procedures for flight departures and arrivals to maximize safety of flight operations; to minimize impact on other flight operations; and to minimize noise impacts on the residents living near Oakland International Airport.
All jet operations are scheduled during daytime hours with departure and arrival paths over San Francisco Bay, to minimize the noise impact. There is no public access to the military or civilian aircraft participating in Fleet Week festivities while they are based at Oakland International Airport.
Visit the air show web site at www.fleetweek.us or call 415-979-4000 for more information. To report a Fleet Week noise concern, please call the U.S. Navy at (510) 263-1821.
Oakland International Airport served 12.7 million passengers and handled more than 600,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2002, making it the second fastest growing airport in the nation. Oakland International has more than 200 flights a day on 12 domestic and international carriers to 37 nonstop destinations, including Atlanta, the Hawaiian Islands, New York, Washington, D.C., Mexico, and seasonal service to the Azores (Portugal) and Costa Rica. The airport is a revenue division of the Port of Oakland.
