Led
by President John Loh and Commissioner Frank Kiang, a delegation
from the Port of Oakland traveled to Shanghai China to commemorate
the raising of the first of four post-Panamax class container cranes
being built by Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC).
Destined for the new 120 acre Hanjin
Terminal now under construction, the cranes will be delivered to
Oakland in October of this year. When delivered they will be the
world's largest and fastest container cranes, weighing 1,600 tons
and with a 65 meter outreach, capable of discharging vessels up
to 23 containers wide. The Hanjin Terminal will open in January
of 2001.
Up to six additional cranes have been
ordered from ZPMC for the adjacent 150 acre Berth 57 - 58 facility
being built adjacent to the Hanjin Terminal. When completed, the
two new terminals will provide an additional 1,000,000 TEUs of annual
container capacity to the Port of Oakland.
