OAKLAND, CALIF.--The Port of Oakland's Board of Commissioners has awarded a $57 million contract to Port of Oakland Constructors to begin the modernization of its seaport. As the single largest contract the Port has awarded to date, the Berth's 55-56 project includes construction of a container wharf, dike and container yard and will be located in the Port's inner harbor. Construction is scheduled to begin next month and be completed in late 2000.
Port of Oakland Constructors is a joint venture of General Construction Co. of Poulsbo, Washington, and Seaworks, Inc. of Oakland.
"This contract also is the largest single contract for our employee-owned company," said Bill Urban, president and chief executive officer for General Construction Company, headquartered in Poulsbo, some 15 miles west of Seattle. "We are delighted to have this opportunity to work on such an important project."
"We are very pleased that as a local small minority business we will be able to participate in the building of the Port's Vision 2000 Program," remarked Saber P. G. Zell, president, Seaworks, Inc. Seaworks, Inc., headquartered in Oakland, has been involved in various projects with the Port over the past 18 years.
The Berths 55-56 project is part of the Port's $560 million Vision 2000 expansion project, that consists of two other new container berths (Berths 57-58), associated terminal wharves and container yard, realignment of Seventh Street, a new access road to the new terminals, and the Joint Intermodal Terminal. In addition, the project provides for a new 30+ acre public park along Middle Harbor Shoreline.
The Port of Oakland, established in 1927, is an independent department of the City of Oakland employing some 560 people. The Port extends approximately 19 miles along the east side of the Oakland Estuary from the border of the city of Emeryville immediately north of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, to the south to the border of the city of San Leandro. Port facilities include four major marine terminal areas covering almost 1,000 acres; Oakland International Airport which covers an area of over 2,500 acres; 1,100 acres of commercial, industrial, recreational and other land; 950 acres of underdeveloped land; and about 9,800 surface acres of water area.
