Port of Oakland's Successful Employment Resources Development Program Announces New Job Hotline
Program to Take Part in Jack London Gateway Plaza Grand Opening, January 22
OAKLAND, CALIF.--To assist Oakland residents in finding job opportunities with Port of Oakland tenants, the Port's Employment Resources Development Program (ERDP) has established a Job Hotline that provides callers with a sample of job openings, salary ranges for these jobs, as well as instructions for securing a job application. The hotline number is (510) 272-1590 and can be heard in English and Spanish.
The ERDP has assisted nearly 2,400 Oakland residents in finding jobs with Port tenants since the program's introduction in 1993. Each year, the number of Oakland residents who have found jobs through the ERDP has steadily increased at an average rate of 14 percent. In fiscal year 1998/1999, the ERDP placed 532 Oakland residents in jobs with Port area tenants at Jack London Square and the Oakland International Airport.
Program Fills Job Need in Community
"We are committed to providing job opportunities for Oakland residents" remarked Charles Foster, executive director, Port of Oakland. "But it doesn't stop there. Our program also conducts job search workshops and job readiness skills assessment for potential candidates. I really feel our program fills a valuable service to our community."
"Over the last seven years, our program has found potential candidates for Port tenant jobs through its partnership with local community based organizations, including the PIC (Private Industry Council), Catholic Charities, and the Bay Area Urban League," said Carol Beadle, ERDP coordinator. "We also conduct special pre-screening workshops for one of our major tenants, Federal Express, which accounted for 62 percent of ERDP placements in 1999."
The Port's ERDP actively seeks out potential job candidates by participating in a variety of job fairs and events in Oakland and surrounding communities. Some of the events at which the ERDP has participated include the Bay Area Urban League's East Bay Job Fair; San Francisco State University Career Job Fair; City of Oakland Area III Hotspot Job Fair; San Leandro's Eden Area Job Fair for Youth; Merritt College Career Job Fair; and many others.
ERDP Community Outreach Includes Presence at Jack London Gateway Plaza Grand Opening Saturday, January 22
The ERDP will staff a table at the Jack London Gateway Plaza grand opening celebration, on Saturday, January 22, from 10:00 a.m. Ð 2:00 p.m. The Jack London Gateway Plaza is located at 900 Market Street in Oakland, at the corner of 8th and Market Streets. At this event, the ERDP will provide information on current job openings with Port tenants, take applications, and answer questions about the program as well as general questions about the Port.
