Port of Oakland working tonight after daytime halt

Second shift will be on the job loading, unloading vessels

Oakland, CA - May 1, 2015: Port of Oakland vessel operations resume tonight at 7 after daytime work stopped for a rescheduled longshore labor meeting. The Port said second-shift employees will report for work loading and unloading ships tied up at berth.

The monthly labor meeting suspended first-shift vessel, yard and gate operations today. Waterfront employers OKd the meeting of longshore workers which was moved from its traditional Thursday night timeslot.

According to published reports, some dockworkers used the time to participate in a demonstration in Oakland. Scores of demonstrators marched from the Port area this morning to Oakland City Hall. The march was peaceful, Port officials said. No incidents were reported.

The Port said it gave advance notice of the suspension to shippers and harbor truckers. The alert helped minimize disruption, the Port added. It said there should be no lasting impact from today’s dayside work stoppage.

The Port of Oakland doesn’t employ longshore labor or manage marine terminals. The Port leases terminal facilities to privately owned operating companies that contract with dockworkers.
