Port of Oakland Hopes for 100 Kids at Earth Day Beach Cleanup

Middle Harbor Shoreline Park site for trash bagging, lunch, lessons in nature

Oakland, CA - April 16, 2015: Earth Day comes early to Oakland this year. The Port of Oakland said today it will hold its annual beach cleanup Saturday to commemorate the global observance. That’s four days before actual Earth Day on April 22.

The Port is hoping for 100 kids to take part in cleanup activities at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, 2777 Middle Harbor Road, Oakland. Naturalist discussions begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the cleanup, a children’s circus and barbeque lunch.

The 38-acre park is located along the entrance to Oakland Estuary at the heart of the Oakland seaport. Volunteers will help clean litter from the park’s quarter-mile shoreline.

The Port opened Middle Harbor Shoreline Park in 2004 on the site of a former U.S. Navy depot. It was constructed with community consultation to help educate Oakland youngsters about the area’s environment and history. Restoration of natural habitat at the park has made it a draw for San Francisco Bay shorebirds.

To participate in the beach cleanup, call 510-272-4802.
