CREW DELIVERS HANDS-ON EDUCATION ABOUT EARLY TRADE AND LIFE AS A SAILOR

Oakland, Calif. - Feb. 24, 2015 - It’s a pirate ship, it’s a trading ship...No, it’s the Hawaiian Chieftain, a swift, topsail ketch in port at Jack London Square at the Foot of Broadway. Built of steel in Hawaii in 1988 and originally designed for cargo trade among the Hawaiian Islands, the ship’s design is reflective of the Atlantic coastal sailing vessels in the latter half of the 1800s.

Hawaiian Chieftain Captain Chris Anderson says that today the tall ship is part of the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (GHHSA) and the ship’s crew provides a variety of hands-on educational experiences, ”We make it possible for people to get a true sense of what it must have been like for those who moved cargo in the earlier days of maritime trade.”

Captain Anderson talks about this living history experience in a new video released today. It’s available here: http://youtu.be/wFvOKkh4Dmc.

Visitors can take a dockside tour of the Hawaiian Chieftain for a small donation at Jack London Square. There are also opportunities to participate in ticketed sailing adventures and simulated battles on the San Francisco Bay. GHHSA’s mission is to promote and preserve maritime history and traditions.

The Hawaiian Chieftain is joined at the Port’s Jack London Square by the Lady Washington. Lady Washington is a replica of the first American vessel to make landfall on the West Coast of North America in 1788. For more information on public tours and sailing schedules please go to: http://historicalseaport.org.

Both ships will be in port at Jack London Square at the Oakland waterfront through March 5, 2015.
